Advice to next year's ChE 344 class from Winter 2007

If you are taking 360 and 344, be sure to start group work early. Time management is difficult since both courses are group oriented.

Have fun with your group. Bond in ways other than by doing homework.

Take advantage of your group members' knowledge. Studying/quizzing each other in beneficial.

Do the group homework individually before meeting. The meetings will be more productive and faster.

Set a schedule of group meeting times but be flexible and willing to change if necessary.

Do reading prior to lectures so the material is a review instead of brand new. That way, you can participate in class (comfortably).

Take advantage of office hours.

Understand how various variables affect results. (Howlwhy). Trends are important on exams!!

Look at Tuesday's homework early - they are sometimes long and difficult.

Read the summary notes and self tests.

Point out Prof. Fogler's mistakes - you will get donuts. Who knew mistakes taste so sweet?

Read the material a few day before the lecture.

Do the study problems and then do them again before the exam.

Start group homework early.

Re-do class problems approximately a week after the lecture which it occurred in.

Actively participate in class and class problems.

Work the study problems way before exams.

Find a group to talk through study problems after everyone has done them.

Make sure you use online summary notes and all self-tests.

Work every problem assigned by yourself to be sure you know how to do them (especially class problems and group homework).

Start the OEP early!!

Keep up with the material covered.

Read the book.

Make sure everyone in your group understands all group problems and any other topics in class. It reinforces everyone's understanding of material.

Always do the complete homework assignment yourself before going to group meetings and put in a real effort on it. That is the only way to learn the material and will make group meetings go a lot faster.

Since there is no discussion section, get help from the GSI's during office hours.

Read the examples in the book. The "Lecture Summaries" online are also very helpful.

You will be able to learn all the material if you utilize all the available resources.

Keep everything you do, and make sure it's organized. You will need to go back to old problems (both homework, lecture, and in-class problems) on the second exam and the final.

Do the study problems as you go along. Some of them are on the exams and it's a lot of work if you wait to do them the night before the exam.
