Essentials of Chemical Reaction Engineering Typos

It is recommended that you flip through your Essentials of Chemical Reaction Engineering textbook and correct these typographical errors before reading.

  1. Page xxv, just before subsection G, Acknowledgements. The following paragraph was unfortunately omitted from the first printing of the book.

    "However, all intensive laws tend often to have exceptions. Very important concepts take orderly, responsible statements. Virtually all laws intrinsically are natural thoughts. General observations become laws under experimentation."

  2. Page 3, (Ch. 6 DVD-ROM) should read (Ch. 8 DVD-ROM)

  3. Page 29, Problem P1-11B part (c) should read k=300 dm3/mol/h

  4. Page 29, P1-11B (a) V = 99 dm3 should read VCSTR = 99 dm 3

  5. Page 95, CC6H6 should read C2C6H6

  6. Page 98, P3-3 should read
    (a)... at 500K
    (b)... at T=300K

  7. Page 123, Equation (E4-4.1) P should be capitalized, under square root sign

  8. Page 124, E4-4.8: (1-0.14X1) should read (1-0.14X)

  9. Page 137, P4-10c, The Additional Information section is accidentally listed twice. Once before, and once after the questions.

  10. Page 150, Step 5, Evaluate section, The integral on "k dt" should go from 0 to t, not 0 to 1

  11. Page 159, Under 5. Evaluate should read
    (1) vf0 = 3.60 dm3/s instead of 3.62
    (2) v0 = 7.20 dm3/s instead of 7.24
    (3) V = 5.56 m3 = 196.4 ft3 = 1468 gal

  12. Page 190, Figure of the CRE algorithm, The California Professional Engineers' Exam Problems should be listed as P15B-P20B.

  13. Page 198, P5-8A (g) says to look at Table P-3 on page "xiii". Table P-3 is actually on "xviii".

  14. Page 200, P5-16b (b) it says to go to preface B.2 for the critical thinking questions but the critical thinking questions are in B.3.

  15. Page 200, P5-17B (c) should read page xviii

  16. Page 203, Line 7 below figure should read P5-24B

  17. Page 221, Example 6-2, Part c, V=500 dm3 instead of 400.

  18. Page 224, Example 6-2, Part c, The dashed line should be moved to V=500.

  19. Page 240, (b) "IMRCF" should read "membrane reactor"

  20. Page 316, Figure E8-7.1, NA and NB that point to the lines should be switched

  21. Page 320, At the top of Figure E8-8.3 (a) "Conventional PBR" should read "Conventional PFR"

  22. Page 327, (c) top line should read k1 = k2 = 0.25/h

  23. Page 328, P8-5B line 9, "Professor John Falkner" should read "Professor John Falconer".

  24. Page 331, P8-12A top row, right hand side, should read k1A = 1.0 min-1

  25. Page 332, Problem 8-13B, The third reaction should read: B+2C→D+F (replace the E with an F). Also change subscripts for reactions rate law to 3F, r3F = k3FCB2CC

  26. Page 334, P8-16B line 3, "Professor Al Weiner" should read "Professor Al Weimer".

  27. Page 353, Under equation 9-19 the book states: "For the overall reaction E + S → P + S", it should read "E + S → P + E"

  28. Page 359, Above equation 9-29 "E + S ↔ E · S &harr P · S ↔ P + E" should read "E + S ↔ E · S &harr E · P ↔ P + E"

  29. Page 499, The second paragraph from the bottom, change "the reader" to "you"

  30. Page 501, Equation (E11-3.15) X should be inside last bracket, i.e. the denominator should read KCA0[1-(1+1/KC)X]

  31. Page 501, 1/3 of the way down the page, the statement "Equations (E11-3.11) and (E11-3.12)" should say "Equations (E11-3.10) and (E11-3.11)".

  32. Page 505, the following should be added to Figure E11-4.1's description: "Note: Curve uses approximate interpolated points"

  33. Page 509, in the Analysis section, "450 K" should read "460 K" and "445 K" should read "430 K".

  34. Page 515, P11-4A, Part (d), after PBR, add "with 7ρb = 1 kg/dm3"

  35. Page,523, In the second-to-last paragraph, 7th line from bottom, "Equation (11-33)" should read "Equation (12-3)"

  36. Page 527, Last line of Table 12-1 should read "actual"

  37. Page 531, Equations E11-3.11, E11-3.12, and E11-3.13 should be E11-3.10, E11-3.11, and E11-3.12, respectively.

  38. Page 538, margin 3 should read "3. Co-current heat exchange with variable Ta."

  39. Page 538, under additional information, should read "Ua = 110 J/s·m3·K"

  40. Page 538, "exp" missing in Equation (E12-2.4), "... = 3.58 exp[34,222(1/T-1/103J)]"

  41. Page 541, The last sentence of the Analysis section (just before Case 2) should read "... other heat exchange cases".

  42. Page 553, 8th line above Table E12-3.1 should read "Section 12-5"

  43. Page 554, 3rd line under solution should read, 3.10, i.e., [E12-3.10]

  44. Page 557, Delete Equation numbers (12-25) and (12-26) on the right hand side.

  45. Page 572, Equations (E12-7.16) through (E12-7.19) (concentrations) need to be multiplied by the (T0/T) term, e.g., CA=CT0(FA/FP)y(T0/T). Polymath program is correct.

  46. Page 574, The graph in figure E12-7.1 (b) the molar flow rate Fd. is very small and essentially the same as the bottom axis.

  47. Page 575, The last line of text is missing a parenthesis. It should read: "Equations (E12-7.1)"

  48. Page 587, P12-7A units of Ua are wrong, should read Ua = 20 cal/m3/s/K

  49. Page 593, P12-21B, delete the sentence, "The feed is equal molar in A and B..."

  50. Page 607, Change °C to °F. Should read, "T0 = (460°R + 38°F) + 17°F"

  51. Page 608, 3rd line of the Analysis section, "561°F" should read "561°R"

  52. Page 626, In the stoichiometry section, subscript on N should read H2SO4, i.e., NH2SO4 = CH2SO4,0V0

  53. Page 628, The first line temperature should read K, (i.e., 305 K).

  54. Page 629, The last line should say "rupture disk"

  55. Page 630, The second line reads "... for greater", should read "... far greater"

  56. Page 630, In the rate law section, delete the asterisk "*", should read -r2S=k2SCS

  57. Page 630 Minus signs missing should read
    ΔHRx1A = -45,400 J/mol
    ΔHRx2S = -3.2·105 J/mol

  58. Page 630, The second-to-last line omits units, should read "CIO = 0.088 mol/dm3"

  59. Page 641, P13-3B line 7 should read "...of about 510°F"

  60. In Introductions to Kinetics Challenge II, step 13 'pionts' should be 'points'.
