COMSOL Multiphysics™ ECRE edition (COMSOL ECRE)

COMSOL Multiphysics is an exceptionally powerful tool for performing PDE-based modeling and simulations in a broad number of disciplines. Here we focus on energy and mass balances. To help you better understand the underlying physics and principles, the COMSOL Multiphysics engine runs a number of ready-made models in which you can change key parameters and observe the results. Thus, the accompanying CD includes the COMSOL Multiphysics computational engine along with six complete models and full documentation. These illustrative models combine energy and mass balances in both isothermal and non-isothermal conditions using the appropriate application modes in COMSOL Multiphysics.

The COMSOL ECRE is a subset of the full version of COMSOL Multiphysics and the Chemical Engineering Module. We supply it with the full graphical user interface found in the standard COMSOL Multiphysics distribution including all the dialog boxes for data input plus the required solvers as defined by Professor H. Scott Fogler. It also features all of the visualization and postprocessing functionality found in COMSOL Multiphysics.

However, the ECRE Version places a number of limitations on capabilities found in the standard package. These limitations concern the CAD and mesh tools among other things. In the accompanying documentation we give a more into depth presentation of the capabilities of COMSOL Multiphysics Chemical Engineering Module and the ECRE Version.

Installing COMSOL ECRE

  1. Insert the COMSOL ECRE CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. The Introduction window should appear automatically; if not, run the file setup.exe located in the Windows\VM directory on the installation CD.

  2. Click Next.

  3. Once you have read the license agreement, click the I accept the terms of the License Agreement button and then click Next.
  4. Specify the path to the COMSOL ECRE installation directory.

  5. Click Next.
  6. Review the preinstallation summary.

  7. Click Install. A Warning window appears if the computer has insufficient disk space. You then have the option to free up some space or click Previous and remove some components previously selected for installation. When enough space becomes available, the Warning window changes to a Ready to Proceed window, allowing you to click Install.
  8. The installer now copies files to the specified folder (this process might take several minutes). During this time you will be presented with some information about the product.

  9. Now the Install Complete window appears. If errors occurred during installation this window issues a notification. The installer also generates a log to the text file COMSOL_3.1_ECRE_InstallLog.log located in the specified installation directory. The following Install Complete window appears if installation is complete.

  10. Click Done to quite the installer.
  11. To open COMSOL ECRE, click the COMSOL 3.1 ECRE icon that has appeared on your desktop.
