Realism

Realism is the technique of presenting characters and ideas in literature as they are; it can be defined as "the faithful representation of reality" [17]. Realism, like naturalism, is also representative of a "type" of character; unlike naturalism, which is a representation of working-class characters, realism is generally employed to represent more of a middle-class type of character.

The general goal of realism is to render reality in as true and accurate a light as possible, with an emphasis on character development and description at the expensive of an overarching plot. Events in a realistic narrative should always be plausible, and objectivity from the author is just as important as it is in naturalism. Characters should be realistically created in their entire complexity, and described in relation to each other, their environment, class, and background.
