In the 1880's Bay City's population was approximately 25,000. The city sprung up partly because of the lumber industry, when a mill was constructed at the mouth of the Kawkawlin River. In 1865, at the height of the lumbering activity, more than 50 mills were active in the Bay City area.

"Bay City, nestled in the Saginaw Valley, was in those days surrounded by a fruitful pine forest, and it was the cutting of those pines, and other trees, that crowned the area "Lumber Capitol of the World".

It is no wonder that with the Kawkawlin River being so much a part of Bay City life, that the community were also boat building entrepreneurs in the late 18th century. It was one of their earliest industries, which now builds a variety of crafts such as U.S. Naval vessels and yachts.
