Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Ephesians 5: 21-25

Religion has played an important role in helping to shape gender roles within society. Men are shown to be strong, the providers, and the protectors of the their family, while the women are taught to be quiet, nurturing, and obedient. In the bible, there are many passages that dictate how women can be “good” wives to their husbands. These sentiments are reflected in society through the ways in which boys and girls are socialized. In some cases, both religious men and women may be taught that by fulfilling their appropriate gender role, they are able to fully serve their family and society to the best of their abilities, and therefore are being faithful servants of God.
