Carl Sandburg's Chicago

Carl Sandburg, the early 20 th century poet, focused on his hometown of Chicago as the subject of his first published book, Chicago Poems in 1916. His poems reflected his experiences growing up as the son of a poor Swedish immigrant in Galesburg , Illinois and later becoming a reporter for the Chicago Daily News . Sandburg wrote about what he saw, what he heard and what he experienced. His is considered a major actor in the Chicago Renaissance and the socialist movement, especially the labor revolution. Sandburg's poems introduced loud, strong, proud, free-verse poetry as a weapon against capitalism. He successfully grabbed readers' attention through his exquisite use of language and introduced them to the horrors of industrialization by taking them inside his city….
