Urban Planning 502: Environmental Planning

Course Description:

This is a graduate level introductory course in the isues and techniques of environmental planning, with a focus on land use issues. The course will use current cases at the regional urban level in the U.S. Our goal will be to explore sustainable alternatives for urban growth at the regional level. This will be an intensive reading and writing course. It is an interdisciplinary course, designed to meet the needs of students from several graduate programs on campus. Graduate students from Urban Planning, SNRE and Architecture will be given first priority. Undergraduates will be admitted with permission of instructor.

The course will provide an introduction to the important issues and techniques for environmental planning in each of the areas listed on the outline below. This course should provide you with the ability to identify major environmental impacts in a professional or research setting, as well as major mitigation and planning devices. You will have teh opportunity to explore a specific area of envrionmental planning in depth, throught the second paper, which will be field research and/or group work.
