Gary Paul Nabhan is an ethnobotanist and Director of Science at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. His first book, The Desert Smells Like Rain: A Naturalist in Papago Indian Country (1982), won him recognition as a gifted writer. His second, Gathering the Desert (1985), received the John Burroughs award. His other books include Enduring Seeds: Native American Agriculture and Wild Plant conservation (1989) and the new work from which he will read, Cultures of Habitat: Indigenous Traditions, Biodiversity, and Place (Counterpoint).
