The Environmental Theme Semester is pleased to announce three exciting events: The University Environmental Pledge, The Rally for the Environment, and The Energy Fair. The Rally for the Environment and the Energy Fair will occur on Friday, March 20 at 12:00pm on the University of Michigan Diag. The goal of the rally is to unite the campus community behind environmental issues and to promote awareness as to the impact of environmental degradation. Michigan Environmental Council's President Lana Pollack, Greenpeace Senior Advisor Harvey Wasserman and Representative Liz Brater will be the keynote speakers for the Rally. The Treetown singers and Guerilla Theater will kick off the rally. The Rally challenges the University to rethink its relationship with the environment by inviting student groups, regional and political organizations, NGOs and businesses to meet with students, distribute information, and present exhibit materials. Individuals will learn about environmental degradation and what action they can take to make a difference. The Energy Fair invites all student organizations, University departments, community groups, and private corporations to join in efforts to inform the University population and the public about various aspects of energy conservation. All Rally and Energy Fair participants are encouraged to set up an exhibit, an inspiring visual, and/or an information booth on the Diag. Rally exhibits and The Energy Fair will continue from 12-4pm. In weeks leading up to the rally and energy fair, students and faculty are encouraged to take part in The University Environmental Pledge. The pledge is a symbol of personal commitment to consideration of environmental issues and impacts in each person's daily life. University members will take the pledge in the residence halls, in campus buildings, and at various student organizations' weekly meetings. Students and faculty will take the Environmental Pledge together as a community at the Rally for the Environment. For further information on getting involved in The Rally for the Environment, The Environmental Pledge, and The Energy Fair, please contact Trisha Miller at tbm@umich.edu. or Allison Clements at clements@umich.edu.
