So, WHAT can I recycle and HOW?
The following is a list of the items that are able to be recycled in the
Ann Arbor area. Please note that we did not specify how to separate the
items in each of the categories. This varies from city to city, so
contact your local recycling center for details.
- Recyclable paper products
- -Newspaper
- -Books (paperbacks)
- -Magazines, catalogs, flyers, leaflets, other types of "junk mail"
- -Mixed paper
- -Paper bags
- -Corrugated cardboard
- -Textiles
- -Boxboard, posterboard (cereal box type material)
- Containers
- Glass (Clear, brown, green )
- Ceramics (No light bulbs)
- Cans (Tin, aluminum)
- Aerosol containers
- Scrap metal
- Juice and milk box containers
- Toxics
- Batteries
- Motor Oil
- Oil filters
Ann Arbor Curbside recycling guidelines
- Recyclable items must be placed on the curb in clear view by 7 am.
- They must be placed in easily accessible areas unhindered by cars, trees,
etc.
- Loose papers must be stacked in bins, not bagged. Reusal of these types
of items is suggested so to further preserve the environment.
These items include:
- Newspapers
- Letterhead, copy, and notebook paper
- Computer paper
- Envelopes
- Periodicals
- Small cardboard
- Glass, plastic, tin, and aluminum containers should be placed in the
green bins. All containers must be emptied and rinsed. Lids and labels
must all be removed. Specific containers which can be recycled include:
- Food, beverage, or cleaning containers
- Small plastic bottles
- Plastic containers
- Milk and juice cartons
- Glass containers (clear, brown, green)
- Ceramics (plates, etc.)
- Small scrap metal
- Regarding Toxic Materials
- Toxics must be placed in
sealed containers.
- Motor oil must be in containers
less than 11 inches tall, and must have a secure lid.
- No more than 3
gallons can be turned in at one time.
- Oil filters must be drained for a
day,
and stores in sturdy sealed plastic bags.
- Batteries must also be
placed in sealed plastic bags.
For large quantities of recyclable materials which cannot be collected
curbside, the Ann Arbor "Recycle Plus" drop off station is located at
2050 S. Industrial. The new Ann Arbor "Materials Recovery Facility" also
accepts the aforementioned items.
"Opened in 1995, the city of Ann Arbor's new Materials Recovery Facility
(MRF), accepts the materials (aforementioned)...It is owned and operated
by the city of Ann Arbor and and operated by Resource Recovery Systems of
Centerbrook Connecticut on behalf of the city." (Recycling just got easier,
