All correspondance with the U-M Alpha Eta Chapter of Eta Sigma Phi should be sent to the Eta
Sigma Phi Grammateus Inna Dykman, at innad@umich.edu.
Website concerns should be sent to the Eta Sigma Phi Webmaster at esp.websmaster@umich.edu.
Have a question that's not on the list? E-mail the ESP Grammateus at mblong@umich.edu.
- I took Latin and/or Ancient Greek in High School? Does that mean I'm eligible for ESP?
Unfortunately, enrollment in High School courses of Latin/Greek do not count toward admittance into Eta Sigma Phi. At least one course in Greek/Latin must be taken (with an average grade of B or better) at the University of Michigan to fulfill this requirement.
- I took Latin and/or Ancient Greek at another college or university? Does that mean I'm eligible for ESP here at Michigan?
Just like students who have taken Latin/Ancient Greek in high school, students must have completed at least one course in a classical language at U-M (with an average grade of B or better). If, however, you were a member of Eta Sigma Phi at your former college and wish to transfer your membership to U-M, please contact the current Alpha Eta Chapter Grammateus who will make sure the proper paperwork is completed and filed with ESP national.
- Do students of Modern Greek qualify for ESP?
No. Although the Modern Greek program is an integral part of the U-M Classics Department, Eta Sigma Phi (as part of a National Organization) is for students of ANCIENT Greek/Latin only. But thanks for your interest!
- What is the minimum GPA for admission? Is that only in Latin/Ancient Greek courses?
Eta Sigma Phi national sets 3.0 GPA as the minimum for acceptance into Eta Sigma Phi, and U-M keeps this requirement. This GPA is the average of a student's Latin/Ancient Greek Language courses: it does not include Archaeology, Civilization, or any other type of class, Classical or otherwise
- How much is the membership fee? Is it a one-time fee?
Dues to Eta Sigma Phi are one-time, required upon induction, and currently are $20 (February 2006). U-M's Alpha Eta chapter does not charge any additional fees.
- What does Eta Sigma Phi stand for?
Eta Sigma Phi is an acronym for , "The Society of Lovers of the Greek Tradition". Eta Sigma Phi, however, is also full of 'phil-Latinists', so whatever your classical language, you'll find a home in Eta Sigma Phi!
- What does the Eta Sigma Phi motto mean?
If you want to know what means, perhaps you should join!
