The University of Michigan is seeking an executive director for the Department of Public Safety. The executive director is responsible for assuming a leadership role in the development, maintenance and application of policies and procedures for crime and loss prevention, law enforcement, and safety and security services at the University of Michigan.

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is a full-service police agency consisting of 55 sworn police officers, a K-9 unit, 24/7 communications center, criminal investigation unit, parking enforcement, support stafff, and security personnel, all having close association with Housing and Hospital security. DPS provides coverage for the entire Ann Arbor campus and works closely with local law enforcement in endeavors of mutual concern. The University community includes approximately 41,000 students, with more than 12,000 living on campus, and over 35,000 faculty and staff members. The campus covers more than 3,000 acres and contains approximately 350 buildings. The University of Michigan Health System is part of the Ann Arbor campus and includes 3 hospitals and numerous outpatient clinics. This makes the University of Michigan an interesting and challenging opportunity for a public safety professional with the right qualifications. DPS is located in a newly-renovated building, with excellent facilities and equipment, and is actively engaged in the CALEA accreditation process.

Job Requirements
Necessary qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; eight years of progressively responsible experience in law enforcement, public safety and security, or industrial safety; considerable knowledge of state and federal law; demonstrated leadership, creative problem solving, innovative ideas, technological competence and management skill; a demonstrated ability to work effectively in a complex, decentralized organization; excellent written and oral communication skills; the proven ability to initiate and maintain productive and collaborative relationships with internal and external constituencies; and eligibility for certification by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) within one year of appointment. In addition, the candidate will be expected to have a demonstrated commitment to sustaining and advancing the organization’s diversity.

A Master's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Police Administration or a related field, and experience in higher education law enforcement are desirable. Additionally, completion of a national law enforcement management training program, such as the FBI National Academy, Southern Police Institute or Northwestern Management Training are desirable.
