The State Emergency Relief (SER) Program provides immediate help to individuals and families facing conditions of extreme hardship or for emergencies that threaten health and safety. SER helps low-income households meet emergency needs such as heat and utilities, home repairs, relocation assistance, home ownership services and burial of a loved one. The SER program is primarily designed to maintain low-income households who are normally able to meet their needs but occasionally need help when unexpected emergency situations arise.

Help for families and individuals in economic crisis, including eviction prevention, (for whatever the need is you must show some thing in writing, like from utility, eviction notice or from the court), housing relocation, finding emergency shelter, and utility shutoff prevention. Emergency food assistance and distribution of personal care items. Limited assistance available for housing-related transportation needs. SOS offers comprehensive services for homeless families. Please see the website for more information. SOS does not have income eligibility criteria.

Emergency services for low-income families and individuals, including 24-hour temporary shelter at Staples Family Center for adults and families. Food, utilities, rent, eviction assistance, low-cost short-term counseling and client advocacy. The Salvation Army takes clients on a case-by-case basis, however both income criteria and housing status are normally not factors for denial. They urge everyone to call.

Aids people facing eviction, utility shutoff and other emergencies. Persons must meet income guidelines. Also offers employment training for dislocated workers and utilizes the Work First program. Follows the guidelines for median household income in Washtenaw County.

Friends in Deed is an inter-faith volunteer organization that provides for needs of Washtenaw County residents that are not being met by other human service agencies. This includes emergency financial assistance for basic needs, including transportation and car repair, childcare, clothing, prescriptions and medical needs. Funds also available for unmet basic needs such as housing, utilities and employment needs. Serving only Washtenaw County residents, with a priority towards low-income residents. They will, however weigh all on a case-by-case basis. Friends in Deed is not a walk-in service. You must phone first. Also has a furniture grant program, call 484-7607, need proof of income and residency.

Faith-based community development corporation that includes emergency assistance programs providing one time financial and support services to its clients. These include homeless prevention assistance, homeless transition assistance, emergency medical assistance and emergency transportation. Also offers counseling service and workshops/seminars on budgeting and credit management. You do not have to be a POWER client, but these persons are normally served first. POWER prioritizes their donated services on low-to-medium income families – this largely depends on the family size. POWER follows the guidelines for median household income in Washtenaw County.

Hope has access to very limited funds to help with eviction notices and utility shut-off notices as well as other essential emergency needs. You must bring proof of income and ID, a documentation of the amount needed and any decision letters from other agencies. From there, you will fill out an application for aid and the social worker at Hope will review your application and contact you.
