Graduate Experience Project Graduate Experience Project 
As one of the programmatic components of the Graduate Experience Project, the peer advising program was initiated in September of 1996. Applications for peer advisors were solicited over the summer and by September, there were 17 peer advisors in place, at least one for each department of the College of Engineering as well as for Physics/Applied Physics and Chemistry. Peer advisors are experienced women graduate students who are interested in helping new female students "learn the ropes" upon entering graduate school.
Peer advisors serve as a readily accessible source of information on everything from which courses are more difficult within the department to where the best spots for parking on campus might be. A training session was provided for the peer advisors early in the semester, and they met with their new students at an informal social event of their own choosing, such as a coffee break or going out for pizza. Advisors are urged to notify their students of their e-mail address, phone number and office number so there is ample means for communication. Advisors also serve as a liaison between their respective departments and the staff of the GEP, informing them about orientation materials that are provided for new graduate students, as well as names of staff members to see for financial aid advice, etc.
