Kaffeestunde
Kaffestunde am Sonntag: CENTRAL CAMPUS Hallo, schönen Grüss und Willkommen liebe Besucher! That's just a sampling of the delectible delicatessen offered at Sonntisch. If you're new to the German language, you might think that this Sonntisch is a word regularly used by Germans to described a table in the sun or a sunny table or some such silly thing. That assumption, however, would be wrong. The word is totally contrived and has no other reference than to our own little Kaffeestunde on Sundays. This creative tidbit contains one part SONNtag, i.e. Sunday and one part StammTISCH. The word Stammtisch describes a meeting for the sake of discussing things in general and is most commonly associated with a gathering of old men by Germans, but it is slightly altered in its American usage, as most attendees are either undergrads or grad students and not necessarily old or male. Sonntisch is most often served at the Starbucks Café located on the corner of South State and E. Liberty between the hours of 2 and 4pm. We dine on our language as the Germans dine on their best foods, for a good 2 hours, so that every morsel may be enjoyed to the fullest and properly digested. And, if you or anyone you knows has the inclination to improve their German skills such that they might also create compound nouns to tantilize and furthermore satisfy a powerful German appetite, then come without fail each and every Sunday and you will learn. The actual Tisch (table) where the group meets will either be denoted by a little German flag propped up by a Miller Genuine Draft cup or a vibrant red-head speaking German with a slightly Bavarian accent. If your attentive eye can't seem to find either of these two dead give-aways then attune your ear to the forceful sounds of the German language standing out above the flowing English vernacular and allow it's march and thunder guide you to it. Ihr seid alle herzlich eingeladen! Wer: IHR Any questions may be directed to Andrew Kasten by emailing him at akasten@umich.edu.
