Why are there two versions of the transcript?

There are two versions of every transcript: one version includes both time-codes (a time stamp corresponding to a moment on the DVD) and chapter markers (themes), and the second version is unmarked (i.e., does not contain time-codes or chapter markers). Both versions contain identical footnotes. The booklets for each site, which contain all of the interviews for that site, are available with and without the time-codes and chapter markers.

What is a time-code?
Time-codes correspond to a place on the DVD version of the interview (e.g., 00:30:25). In this case, the time-code refers to a moment 30 minutes and 25 seconds into the interview.

What is a chapter marker?
Chapter markers indicate some of the general themes in that portion of the interview (e.g., Family). Chapter markers are associated with time-codes (00:30:25 Family).

What themes are covered by the chapter markers?
The following chapter markers (themes) are used on Global Feminisms Project DVDs:
  • Activism
  • Art
  • Childhood
  • Class
  • Education
  • Family
  • Feminism/Women/Gender
  • History
  • Marriage
  • Media
  • Motherhood
  • Nationalism
  • Personal Narratives & Inspired Figures
  • Politics
  • Race/Ethnicity/Caste
  • Religion
  • Sexuality
  • Work & Research
How do I interpret the time-code and chapter marker?
Using the example of 00:30:25 Family, approximately 30 minutes and 25 seconds into the interview, the interviewee began to discuss a topic related to family. This could be a discussion of her specific family or even her research on the family. The chapter markers are only a general guide so you can quickly peruse an interview and know the broad topics that appear. In addition to time-coded chapter markers, there are 5-minute markers throughout each DVD, which allow viewers to advance the DVD to a specific moment on the DVD.

Where will I find a time-code or chapter marker?
In the transcripts, you will find time-codes and chapter markers throughout the marked transcripts. A time-code and its associated chapter marker looks like this: 00:30:25 Family. Often multiple issues are raised in a portion of an interview, so there may be multiple chapter markers associated with a single time-code (e.g., 00:38:25 Family/Politics/Sexuality).

On the DVDs, the main menu lists the chapter markers (themes) after "Play All." Clicking on a chapter marker will take you to a point on the DVD where the theme is discussed. There may be multiple chapters titled "Family", but they will each correspond to a different part of the interview.

How would I use either version?
The unmarked version could be useful for many purposes, including courses about specific countries, activism, oral history, and methods for coding interviews.

The version with time-codes and chapter markers could be useful if you are searching for specific passages to show clips from the corresponding DVD. For example, if you are searching for thematic passages from an interview, you could search for mentions of "family," identify where the word appears in the interview, and locate the nearest time-code(s). On the DVD, you could then go directly to that time-code rather than watching the whole interview.
