The College of Engineering is organized around the North Campus diag. The Lurie Tower and Lurie Fountain are just a few examples of the unique architecture of North Campus. Nestled in the west courtyard of the François-Xavier Bagnoud Building, the Wave Field is an intimate pure earth art work formed to represent the flow of air waves elemental to the study of aeronautics. Visitors are invited to walk across the 1,800 square feet of waves, or find shelter within them. It is visually striking, transformed throughout the day with the changing shadows of the sun. Many undergraduate engineering students engage in real-world, team projects. Michigan Engineering teams are some of the most successful student projects in the country. The University of Michigan Steel Bridge Team is the new national champion in their field. The U-M Solar Car Team has won three out of seven American Solar Challenge races – more than any other school in history – and consistently ranks among the top solar car teams in the world. Ingenuity, organizational excellence and hard work have made projects like the Human-Powered Submarine, Concrete Canoe Team, Steel Bridge Team and Mars Rover Project models for innovative, student-led thinking.
