- Two photon excited fluorescence measurements of organic conjugated branched molecules and dendrimers. I am setting up the experiment and will be studying the relationship between structure and properties of these molecules. We have one of the world’s fastest lasers (20 fs pulses) in the form of an OPA that is powered by a regenerative amplifier (Spitfire-Pro). TPA has several interesting applications such as optical power limiting, 3-D optical data storage, imaging, photodynamic therapy and optical power limiting.
- Synthesis and characterization of a water soluble poly(phenylene ethynylene). This involves a sequence of organic reactions (such as SN2 substitution) to synthesize two monomers and then couple them using Sonogashira-Hagihara chemistry to synthesize the polymer. Characterization will be done using NMR and GPC.
- Processing and characterization of Polypropylene/Montmorillonite nanocomposites using a reactive twin-screw extruder.
- Impact modification of Polypropylene/Montmorillonite nanocomposites; comparison between a polymeric elastomer and an oligomeric, functionalized elastomer.
- Processing PMMA/Laponite nanocomposites for enhanced hardness, scratch resistance and superior barrier properties. A key feature of this work was that the transparency of PMMA was not sacrificed. Effect of clay loading on PMMA was also studied.
- Nanocomposites from Polycarbonate and nano-sized ferrite particles based on Ni, Fe and Zn were synthesized for imparting magnetic properties to PC. All processing was done using a reactive twin-screw extruder.
- Have also helped with reactive processing for recycling cell phones. In this project, funded by Motorola, the housings were separated from metallic components and then the plastics were attempted to recycle using reactive processing.
