Although the primary focus of PALMA is set on the K-12 students, adults do comprise a very significant part of the organization. Over the years, the number of adult participants has increased dramatically. While early on the group was composed solely of K-12 parents, this is definitely not the case anymore. The adult group is now extremely diverse, both in demographics and English proficiency.

Tutors who work with adults will find that some Spanish skills are essential for efficient communication with the adults, as it may be the case that the participant has had no prior exposure to English. That said, working with the adult group is a great way for tutors to not only practice their Spanish with native speakers but also learn about different cultures.

Tutors who work with adults have less structure during the tutoring period since adults generally do not come with work to finish like K-12 students. PALMA encourages the tutor to communicate with their student in order to come to a consensus on what learning goals will be set for the semester. Many times it is helpful to set learning goals for the tutor as well as the student. For example, what can you learn from your student? Maintain these goals and work with your student to come up with new and creative ways to learn. PALMA provides general resources to aid the students in acquiring a basic understanding of English

The Pre-K program works with children ages three to six on an both on a group and individual level. Tutors and students spend the majority of their time together on the third floor "Free Space" where all participants have an opportunity to get to know one another and work cohesively. Tutors help their students develop basic English and Spanish skills including letters, numbers, shapes, and colors as well as practice writing their own names. Tutors often read and color with their students as a way of teaching them and making their lessons fun. At various points throughout the year, we organize group events and art projects to celebrate holidays and work as a group.

Working with K-12 students involves strengthening their command of specific subjects, helping them prepare for tests or quizzes, and helping them with their homework. Students of this age group have a wide range of Spanish-speaking ability, and all levels of Spanish ability are welcome in a K-12 tutor. Working with this age group offers the unique opportunity to mentor students and encourage their future academic careers.
