Business and Industrial Assistance Division Small and medium-sized businesses in need of technical and management
assistance can contact BIAD, which also helps communities.
Staff members are experienced in finance, marketing,
manufacturing, strategic planning, technology transfer,
and communications.
The Division houses a number of programs: the MBA Domestic
Corps, the EDA University Center for Economic Diversification
and the Great Lakes Trade Adjustment Assistance Center. Career Planning and Placement Area organizations and businesses
in need of new employees or interns can work The Career
Center, which provides employment opportunities for students.
The office posts a wide variety of internships and permanent
positions for local companies. Career counseling and assessment
testing is available for a fee. Center for the Education of Women The Center for the Education of Women - with its mission of service, research and advocacy - is nationally recognized as a catalyst for change as well as a welcoming place for individuals. CEW provides counseling and educational programs to women and men regarding academic, career and life issues; conducts social research on policy and gender issues; and advocates for improved policy and practice. CEW also offers a library with resources about careers, job hunting, resume writing and interviewing. Center for Ergonomics The Center provides introductory
ergonomics training, seminars and job analysis that focus
on reducing occupational musculoskeletal injuries and illnesses.
Projects are also conducted within the manufacturing or
product design facilities of government or corporate sponsors.
The Center is equipped to measure all facets of human perceptual,
information-processing, and motor performance. Services
are state-funded and are offered at no cost to businesses.
Challenge Program Community groups, government agencies
and businesses looking to combine team building with exercise
can tackle the Challenge Program, an experiential program
using various ropes courses. Teamwork, cooperation, communication
and trust are key to the program offered by Recreational
Sports. Continuing Education - Ergonomics Offered in conjunction
with the Center for Occupational Health & Safety, ergonimics
engineers, designers, ergonomists and professionals in
the fields of occupational health and safety can keep up
with the latest news and tools of the trade through continuing
education programs offered. These services are available
on and off campus. Continuing Education - Occupational Health & Safety Continuing education is available for professionals in
the fields of occupational health and safety. Programs
are available on and off campus through the Center for
Occupational Health and Safety Engineering, operated by
the College of Engineering. Continuing Education - Social Work Workshops and non-credits
courses are available through the School of Social Work
to clinicians, managers, community organizers, human service
practitioners and policy-makers. Programs are designed
to help professionals update their skills and learn about
new theories and techniques in human services. EDA University Center for Economic Diversification Area firms seeking to become more innovative, efficient and
flexible can turn to the University Center for Economic
Diversification, funded in part by the Economic Development
Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The
Center helps with production diversification, industrial
facilities renovations, minority business development,
professional education and training, and global competitiveness. Engineering Center for Professional Development The College of Engineering's Center for Professional Development offers
numerous continuing engineering education programs. Graduate
credit courses and non-credit short courses are available
to sponsoring industry sites or designated public sites
through videotape delay, two-way videoconferencing, satellite
broadcast and computer networking. Engineering Research Relations The Office of Engineering
Research Relations links the work of College of Engineering
research and graduate programs with industrial partners,
government agencies and commercial ventures. These partnerships
may be in the form of outreach programs, government programs,
funded research or licensing, and business spin-off activities. Ergonomics Job Analysis Software Preventing whole-body fatigue and low-back injuries is the objective of a software
program that evaluates ergonomic requirements of workplace
manual materials-handling tasks. This computer program,
developed by the Center for Ergonomics, is used to design
work situations that prevent injuries and fatigue. Executive Education Cutting-edge research, practical applications,
and competitive insights await executives and organizations
at the School of Business Executive Education. A portfolio
of more than 50 programs gives executives the tools to
address the issues they confront every day. Foreign Language Tutor/Translator/Typist Services Businesses in need of help with foreign language tutoring or translating
can contact the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures.
The Department maintains a list of people offering their
services for a fee for tutoring, translating, and typing
of French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. Great Lakes Trade Adjustment Assistance Center Small to mid-sized manufacturing firms in the area can seek help
from the Center, which provides technical and management
assistance to import-impacted firms in Michigan, Indiana
and Ohio. The Center helps firms to become competitive
in domestic and international markets. The U.S. Department
of Commerce's Economic Development Administration sponsors
the GLTAAC. Health and Safety Training The Labor Studies Center works
with the UAW to create educational materials promoting
good health and safety practices. The Center offers a Health
and Safety Institute for Workers, which covers topics such
as MIOSHA procedures and appeals, infectious diseases,
investigating hazards, ergonomics, conflict resolution
Health Management Research Center Getting a handle on
health care costs is a service of the Center, which studies
the link between employee health behaviors, productivity,
absenteeism, job turnover and health care costs. It helps
organizations project future health care costs by tracking
the relationship between lifestyle behaviors and other
variables. The Center helps organizations develop wellness
programs at the work site. Industrial Assessment Center The Center works to improve
industrial energy conservation and prevent pollution. It
helps small to medium-sized manufacturing industries to
conserve energy resources and reduce pollution while improving
their financial competitiveness. TheCenter's services are
free thanks to support by the U.S. Department of Energy.
It is operated by the College of Engineering's Program
in Manufacturing. Joint Labor-Management Training The Labor Studies Center
assists unions and corporations in understanding new forms
of joint labor-management work organizations. The Center
has established a joint educationdevelopment program to
meet the challenges facing both labor and management in
the automobile industry. The program is designed to help

labor community. Training programs, conferences and workshops
are available for both unions and joint union-management
programs. Programs include training for union participation
and governance, programs for minorities and women, health
and safety training, and assisting unions and corporations
in understanding new forms of joint labor-management work
organizations. Management Briefing Seminars Business leaders from automotive,
manufacturing and supply firms can benefit from management
briefing seminars sponsored by the College of Engineering.
Experts from the worlds of government, industry and academe
deliver the seminars, which have been presented for more
than 30 years. Medical School Office of Technology Transfer and Corporate Research Medical faculty and researchers are working to commercialize
their laboratory and clinical findings for the benefit
of the public. The office identifies and promotes the transfer
of commercially interesting tehnologies and discoveries. Michigan Business Assistance Domestic Corps Non-profit organizations benefit from the work of Business School
student interns placed with their organizations. The MBA
Domestic Corps develops business strategies, helps with
marketing, facilitates entrepreneurship and uses the power
of technology to increase productivity. . Michigan Information Transfer Source MITS is a fee-based
information service of the University Library for businesses,
industry and individuals not affiliated with the University.
Online database searches, library research, photocopies
of articles and library book loans are available through
MITS. Research areas include business, medicine, science,
engineering, and most other disciplines. Michigan Virtual Automotive and Manufacturing College A virtual college awaits the auto industry -manufacturers,
suppliers, unions and new employees. The MVAC, formed by
the State of Michigan, Michigan State University, the U-M,
the state's other colleges and universities, and the auto
industry, is a college without walls that offers courses
and convenient and cost effective programs. Minorities and Women in the Workforce Helping minorities
and women advance in the work world is the goal of workshops
and conferences hosted by the Labor Studies Center. A Summer
School for Women Workers is offered, as is the Black Men
in Unions Institute and the Hispanic Workers Leadership
Institute. The various programs emphasize improving skills,
community building, labor activism, and political and cultural
awareness. Non-profit and Public Management Center A collaboration
of the schools of Business, Public Policy and Social Work,
NPM promotes education and research about nonprofit and
public management. Graduate students engage in projects
to assist non-profit organizations and NPM connects researchers
to community organizations. Professional Development Programs The University's Human
Resource Development provides professional development
programs, courses and services to the public when space
is available. HRD offers training and education to employees
who want to improve their skills in planning, communication,
organization and interpersonal relationships. Property Disposition Surplus computers, office furniture,
telephone accessories, copiers and other items are available
for sale through the Property Disposition Office. The warehouse
is open to the public throughout the week. Office of Technology Transfer Technology transfer is the
business of the TIVIO, which works to bring commercially
promising inventions of the University to the private sector.
Developing marketing plans, negotiating license agreements
and seeking patent protection are among its activities.
The office also helps with start-up companies spurred by
University research and technologies, including assistance
with business planning and venture capital financing. Training for Union Participation and Governance Training for union members in areas such as negotiations and grievance
handling is available through the Labor Studies Center.
Leadership workshops are offered to union members. The
Center also offers training for union stewards and committeepersons. Worker Health Program of the Institute of Labor and industrial Relations The Worker Health Program of the Institute of
Labor and Industrial Relations studies workplace interventions
and other programs aimed at improving the health of employees.
Employee Assistance Programs, workplace wellness, cardiovascular
and general health promotion are among the areas of research. |
