Informatics Conference


This unique one-day workshop was designed to respond to a need expressed by Michigan health professionals. It focused on the emergence of the field of public health informatics and the methods by which public health data can be used in making decisions to improve the well-being of Michigans' communities. The workshop featured four hands-on learning modules designed to familiarize participants with information technologies and resources in practical applications of public health data:

  • Getting started: computer access and data analysis
  • Building your Database: how to build a database for your health organization
  • Sharing data and GIS Instruction: tools and techniques for sharing data and using GIS (geographic information systems) effectively
  • Browsing and Searching - public health resources on the web

Each participant was given a CD containing information presented at the workshop plus exercises to practice. Information on how to access valuable sources of health-related data was also shared.

Who would benefit from this workshop?

Governmental agencies, public health workers, health care providers and others who can effectively use public health data in making health care decisions impacting their communities.
