Lansing Service Center
Established in 1993, the Lansing Service Center is an integral part of our outreach efforts. A gateway to the
University, the office is staffed by two full-time employees and is located near the State Capitol in mid-Michigan, making it
convenient to state government and citizens from Flint to Muskegon. The liaison with the U-M campuses -- Ann Arbor, Dearborn
and Flint -- increases the opportunity for collaboration and dialogue between the University, Lansing and communities statewide.
The Lansing Staff supports a variety of important interactions between the
University and the people of Michigan by means of:
- Linking University personnel with community agencies, state and local governments, the Legislature, and other groups to develop
programs, technology networks and other services using University resources that benefit their respective constituents and all citizens
of Michigan.
- Providing support to the faculty of Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint campuses representing 24 schools and colleges. Faculty participate
in seminars on critical issues which include electronic commerce, urban planning, tax and budget, changes in environmental and health
policies and other areas of specific interest.
- Jointly sponsoring programs with an ever-growing network of U-M alumni. The office supports the activities of the Legislative
Advocacy Program, an effort of the Alumni Association and the Office of Government Relations to increase alumni involvement in advocating
public higher education. The outreach program includes an annual Michigan Alumni Day in Lansing, Wolverine Caucus
events (for alumni who work in or around state government), and ongoing contact with State legislators.
- Providing assistance to the University's offices of Undergraduate Admissions and Financial Aid and offering a convenient place to meet
with prospective students and provide them with information about the University.
- Providing support to faculty who testify before committees of the Legislature.
- Keeping members of the Executive branch, the Legislature and their staff apprised of research at the University that can be helpful in
solving problems and developing policy.
- Facilitating visits to campus by state and local officials who want to see first-hand the kinds of research or teaching that might be
helpful to Michigan residents. This interaction also increases awareness of student life and concerns.
- Partnering with the U-M Career Planning and Placement Public Service Intern Program and the Political Science Internship Program, in
support of efforts of University students who may want to pursue careers in public service.
- Collaborating with colleagues from other public universities and being accessible to representatives from other institutions.
