Greek 101
Created in 2003, Greek 101 is an interactive, multi-session seminar that informs, educates and equips new members of the UM Greek community to be successful leaders. Beginning in late fall and continuing throughout the winter term, the course addresses a variety of topics and issues that impact and affect Greek Life and the greater University.
- Participants learn about the history of fraternities/sororities globally and at the University of Michigan, including the structure and operation of the four separate Greek councils here.
- Leadership, both individual and organizational, is explored. Students learn about various styles of leadership, what talents and skills they currently possess and prefer, and how to apply different techniques to a range of situations that will increase the possibility of success.
- A strong sense of community is developed through discussion and interaction focusing on subjects ranging from personal health decisions, risk management concerns and best practices, blogging and use of internet networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook, personal ethics/values/citizenship and what they mean in a diverse society, and how to engage in action planning to effect positive change.
The program calls on talented and skilled facilitators from the University community to engage our new members and broaden their perspective and understanding of the resources and opportunities available on campus. When the class concludes, our members are prepared to continue the Michigan tradition of Leaders and Best.
