Green Greeks
Green Greeks is a student run organization that was started in Fall 2005. It's main objective is to encourage environmentally responsible behavior amongst members of the Greek Community. We believe that the Greek Community and the fraternity and sorority that represent it can and should be a role model to the rest of the University for eco-friendly living. Green Greeks can act as a helping hand and a resource to chapters who would like to implement anything from basic recycling programs to educational hands-on environmental projects for their entire house, as well as campus-wide fundraisers. For example, in 2006 we joined forces with Greek Week to run a recycling competition.
The 'Green Greeks Recycling Competition' raised almost $1500 dollars for Greek Week charities and saved over 60,000 cans and bottles from the landfill- a stellar example of what our community can achieve when we work together. Green Greeks is run by a dedicated group of students representing a number of houses on campus. Our long term goals include having comprehensive recycling programs in all Fraternity and Sorority houses on campus, meeting with House Managers and House Moms to discuss simple and efficient ways to decrease energy and water use in houses, and to run annual fundraising events to support environmental charities.
