September 19, 1999 - January 2, 2000

The exhibition will illustrate the achievement of Chinese culture through the presentation of masterpieces dating from the Neolithic Period through the Liang Dynasty (5000 B.C - A.D. 960). Nearly 200 examples of recent archaeological discoveries will be on view including sculpture, ritual implements, musical instruments, paintings, calligraphy, and other decorative objects in ceramics, jade, stone, wood, bamboo, lacquer, gold, and bronze. Recent excavations and new ideas in the field of Chinese archaeology providing different perspectives on early Chinese civilization and art will be explored in this groundbreaking exhibition. Future destinations of the exhibit include the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (February 13 - May 7, 2000) and the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco (June 17 - September 11, 2000).
