Yasuhiro Ishimoto: A Tale of Two Cities October 17, 1999 - January 2, 2000
|
This exhibition celebrates the work of Yasuhiro Ishimoto, who in 1997 was
named a "Person of Cultural Distinction" by the Japanese Emperor--an honor
that confers a lifetime fellowship in recognition of extraordinary
achievement in the arts. Ishimoto's genius for his medium ranges from the
purely intuitive street photography of Tokyo and Chicago found in his work
since his first book, Someday, Somewhere (1958), to the more
meditative vision apparent in the recent studies of footprints in snow and
fallen, decaying leaves that received an exhibition in 1996 at the Museum
of Modern Art, Tokyo. A 144-page publication featuring both color and
duotone photographs is scheduled to be published in conjunction with the
exhibition. The exhibition previously appeared at the Art Institute of Chicago (May 8 - September 12,
1999). See also: NEW BOOKS

Art of Asia Continuing indefinitely
| The MFAH collection of Asian art spans a wide geographic area from India to Tibet, Indonesia, China, Korea, and Japan. It ranges in date from a Neolithic pottery jar from China dating to around 2500 B.C.E. to several Japanese ceramics made within the last decade. In addition to ceramics, the collection includes ritual bronze vessels; jades; Buddhist, Hindu and Shinto sculpture; painted hanging scrolls; handscrolls and screens; miniature paintings; woodblock prints; and textiles. Also on view is the Glassell Collection of Indonesian Gold, the largest collection of Indonesian gold displayed in any museum in the United States. This outstanding collection includes crowns, rings, necklaces, bracelets, ear ornaments, daggers, and swords. These objects convey the mythology and highly individualized styles of the island cultures of Indonesia, especially Bali, known for the fabulous wealth of its royal court. | ||||
