Inklinations: Paintings by Li Wai On July 9 - August 29, 1999 | ||||
| Since his first exhibition in 1968, Hong Kong artist Li Wai On has exhibited widely in Asia, Europe, and the U.S. Over the last two decades, Li's painting style has evolved from traditional Chinese figurative style to bold, thick washes using Chinese ink and color, while retaining the combination of poetry, calligraphy, and painting. Following the Tiananmen Demonstration of June 4, 1989, Li's style turned from color to somber black and white composition. Li finds inspiration from the great masters of the past as well as from the daily urban environment. Many of these paintings are poignant commentaries on the current social and political situation in China and Hong Kong. | ||||
