| One of the first major cultural exchange projects to be organized since the resumption of diplomatic relations between the US and Vietnam, this exhibition introduces the rich variety and creativity of Vietnamese artists. Drawing upon the influences of many cultures including France, the Soviet Union and America, contemporary art in Vietnam is quite distinct from that of other Asian countries. The exhibition will include approximately 80 works by men and women from both North and South Vietnam. | ||||

Drums of Resistance and the Flowering of Bronze Age Vietnam June 26 - October 3, 1999 | ||||
| The Dong Son culture, which flourished from the 7th-6th centuries B.C. to about 200 A.D., is revered for its elaborate bronze drums and decorative artifacts. Dong Son bronze art is known for its rich iconography, depicting warships and feathered warriors, shamans and mythic creatures, animals and geometric symbols. This section of the exhibit will showcase drums, figurines, decorated ceremonial vessels, jewelry, weapons and tools. Contemporary with the Ban Chiang culture of northeast Thailand, Dong Son shares many traits with this sister Southeast Asian culture. This rare collection of bronzes gives us a glimpse of the cultural mind-set of these early peoples of late prehistoric Vietnam. The curator is Armand Labbe. | ||||
