Deities, Courtiers, and Lovers: Indian Paintings from the Jean and
Frances Marshall Collection September 15 - November 28, 1999 | ||||
| This exhibition is drawn from the Jean and Francis Marshall Collection, which comprises more than 250 exquisite Indian miniature paintings and drawings dating from the 14th through the 19th centuries. A special strength of the collection is Mughal painting--art of the Central Asian dynasty that ruled much of Northern India from 1561 until 1700. The painting ateliers of the Mughals drew inventively on Persian, earlier Indian, and European traditions to record historical events at courts. With examples from virtually all of the painting styles of the small Rajput kingdoms, the collection demonstrates the ways Indian artists later combined the Mughal manner with the flat, intensely colored shapes and patterns of Indian folk painting. This exhibition, curated by U.C. Berkeley alumnus Dr. Robert J. Del Bonta, will feature highlights from the Marshall collection, donated to the U.C. Berkeley Art Museum in September 1998. | ||||
