• 194. Stephen Little, Spirit Stones of China: The Ian and Susan Wilson Collection
This exhibition catalogue explores the history of stone collecting in China and the connections between stones, Taoist philosophy, cosmology, garden design, interior decoration, painting and woodblock printing. Extracts from historical Chinese texts such as the Shu jing (Classic of history, ca. 10th century B.C.E.), Yunlin shipu (Stone compendium of the cloudy forest, 1127-32), and Su yuan shipu (Stone compendium of the plain garden, 1613) provide context for this study.

• 427. Hsiang Yuan-pien, Noted Porcelains of Successive Dynasties
Revised and annotated by Kuo Pao-ch'ang and John C. Ferguson. For more detail on this book, see David's article, "Hsiang and His Album," in TOCS 11 (1933). The manuscript, based on Hsiang's ceramic collection, emerged from obscurity in 1885. This edition was prepared from a copy of the original purchased by Bushell; the original had by then been destroyed by fire. The book has a fascinating and somewhat controversial history but stands primarily as a beautifully printed and bound record of a famous Ming dynasty collection with lovely color illustrations. The silk case is broken but usable and the book itself is in fine condition.
(Peking: 1931); 83 folded leaves; Chinese and English text; 86 color plates; silk case: £ 500.00.
