•Edo la Mode: Aesthetic Lineages Seen in Kosode Kimono Motifs
December 21, 1999 - February 6, 2000

Kosode kimono is the traditional name for what is today considered an everyday kimono. The kosode began to be used as an over-robe during Japan's medieval period and it rapidly entered the fashion limelight in the Edo period, establishing itself as a unique, primary decorative clothing item, known for its diverse motifs and embellishments. The exhibition, which draws from the Nomura Collection of the National Museum of Japanese History, focuses on the motifs used on kosode kimonos and the diverse developments that occurred in the fashions of the Edo period.
