The system of Teishitsu Gigeiin, or "Artists under the Patronage of the Imperial Household" was established in 1890 for the promotion of arts and crafts in Japan. Art categories included ceramics, cloisonne, lacquer, textile, metal work, sword painting (Japanese and Western styles), sculpture, photography, seal carving, and design. This exhibit displays Teishitsu Gigeiin appointed from the fields of ceramics and cloisonne. The exhibit incorporates advances of modern archaeology and encompasses the prehistoric Stone Age through the pre-modern Edo period. The emphasis of the exhibit is not on the historical message of the archaeological relics on display, but on the aesthetic message conveyed by the objects.
