• Individual Visiting Fulbright Scholar Grants
Deadline: unstated

Individual Fulbright grants are available for scholars to conduct research, lecture, or pursue combined lecturing and research in the United States. Under the regular Visiting Fulbright Scholar Program, scholars apply in their home country for Fulbright awards. In many countries, particularly those with binational commissions, scholars are expected to submit evidence that they have identified a host affiliation in the United States as part of the application process, well before an actual grant is awarded. In other instances, often in countries where the competition is conducted by USIS, scholars apply for awards and identify specific areas of research or teaching that are used to guide placement at U.S. institutions. For these grantees, the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) is active in confirming affiliations or arranging placements based upon the scholar's interests and needs. U.S. campuses or American academics wishing to host a visiting scholar can initiate the process by inviting the overseas colleague to consider spending a period of two months to an academic year at the institution; suggesting that the scholar contact the Fulbright commission or USIS post to obtain Fulbright application guidelines and determine deadlines that apply in that country; and providing the scholar with a detailed letter of invitation that spells out the tenure of the affiliation and the nature of the proposed endeavor and its relationship to the interests and activities of the department or institution here in the United States. The letter becomes part of the scholar's Fulbright application. CIES program officers can also provide advice and information on how to proceed, including the Fulbright point of contact in the home country. Please note: All applications must go through either your home country Fulbright commission or USIS post. CIES cannot accept applications under any circumstances.

• Visiting Scholar Occasional Lecturer Program
Deadline: first-come, first-served basis

The Occasional Lecturer Program provides support for scholars and professionals who are already in the United States on Fulbright grants to visit other campuses for the purpose of guest lecturing. Individual faculty, departments, and institutions are encouraged to contact scholars directly; scholars apply to CIES for reimbursement of their round-trip transportation costs. To help in identifying suitable scholars, each fall CIES publishes a directory of senior Fulbright scholars currently in the United States.

• Worldwide Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program
Deadline: Nov. 1

The Worldwide Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program brings visiting scholars and professionals from abroad to lecture at U.S. colleges and universities for one semester or one academic year. The program is especially appropriate for small liberal arts colleges, minority-serving institutions, and community colleges, many of which do not often have the opportunity to host visiting scholars. Although preference is given to proposals in the humanities or social sciences, other fields focusing on international issues will be considered. Proposals are welcome from individual institutions, as well as from consortia of two or more institutions. Proposal guidelines are available in June.
