•Second Yearlong Contemporary Sculpture Exhibition
October 16, 1999 - October 3, 2000

Curated by Huang Zhuan, the annual sculpture exhibition is located in Huaqiao Cheng (Overseas Chinese City), Shenzhen. This year's theme is "Balanced Existence: The Ecological City." The theme emphasizes the use of art to provoke reality and the dependence of art and humanity on the natural environment. More significantly, the theme stresses the importance of society to the creation of art and the meaning and implications of contemporary art within present-day Chinese society. The exhibition has attracted enormous attention in China because it has selected a great number of works by young experimental artists and given them autonomy over the creative process. Artists and works include Li Qiao Chen's To Get by Ears, to Meet by Eyes; Ke Chen's Environment; Bernard Venet's Arcs; and Philip King's Sun Root, among others. Mainly placed outdoors, the works are situated in various locations, with some works becoming permanent features in the area.
