•Explore Korea: A Visit to Grandfather's House
October 23, 1999 - October 2001

This first interactive will explore the daily lifestyle of a Korean family in Grandfather's time and features an architectural setting based on a traditional Korean house, a display of Korean folk art, a mural by Seattle-area Korean-American artists, a videotape, and an art workshop space.



•Hirado Porcelain of Japan
November 2, 2000 - July 8, 2001

The exhibit introduces more than one hundred examples of exquisite porcelain from the collection of Allan and Maxine Kurtzman. Produced mainly in the village of Mikawachi in the Hirado feudal fief located in the northwestern corner of Kyûshû, Hirado ware was renowned in Japan for its delicate beauty and superb craftsmanship. The Kurtzman collection is particularly strong in Meiji Hirado porcelains, which are without peer in terms of sheer technical accomplishment before or since. This exhibition has been organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.


•The Embodied Image: Chinese Calligraphy from the John B. Elliott Collection
March 1 - May 5, 2000

The exhibition presents a comprehensive overview of calligraphy, the most important form of artistic expression for the educated class in Chinese culture for nearly two thousand years. The exhibit includes about sixty works such as famous essays, poems, and sutras that have been admired for centuries for their content and their calligraphic style. They are arranged in chronological order by thematic sections that highlight the culture of calligraphy. A catalogue is available.


•Treasures from a Lost Civilization: Ancient Chinese Art from Sichuan
May 10 - August 12, 2001

The first US exhibition of ancient bronzes from a recently discovered Bronze Age civilization in China. It includes 90 bronzes, jades and clay objects dating from the 13th century BCE to 2nd century CE. The exhibition will also incorporate images of supernatural beings and human figures as well as vessels, weapons and various implements.

• Wonders of Clay and Fire: Chinese Ceramics through the Ages
Continuing indefinitely

This comprehensive survey of Chinese ceramic history from the 6th millennium B.C. to the 15th century A.D. is represented by nearly 300 stunning examples from two major private collections. The collection of Jiurutang, Hall of Nine Fulfillments, is a first-rate assemblage of Chinese ceramics prior to the 15th century. The collection of Jinglexuan, Studio of Serene Pleasure, concentrates on objects from the 11th to the 15th century, when China became synonymous with porcelain.
