Japanese Fisherman's Coats from Awaji Island
March 24 - May 20, 2001 | ||||
| The focus of this exhibition is twenty-two sashiko no donza, beautifully quilted, indigo dyed coats worn in Awaji, an island in Japan's Inland Sea. Indigo-dyed coats with elaborate sashiko stitching were worn by many rural populations in Japan. The Awaji coats, made by women in the 1920s, were worn only by fishermen. This unique group of coats preserved in Awaji provides a special opportunity to study their distinctive conography, context and technology. Exhibit guest curated by Sharon Sadako Takeda (LACMA), Luck Robers (UCSB) and Roy hamilton (Fowler Museum). Co-organized with the Fowler Museum of Cultural History at UCLA. Catalogue available. | ||||

In this "Please Touch" area, yarns and fabrics can be examined and a video of the work of Reiko Sudo and the Nuno Studio will be shown. The exhibit is planned to tie in with Japanese Fisherman's Coats from Awaji Island. Exhibit guest curated by Lynn S. Gibor. | ||||
