•Invocations of Paradise: The Traditional Arts of Persia
August 18, 2000 - Spring 2001

This small exhibition, drawn entirely from the Museumıs own holdings, explores the rich, stylistic vocabulary and canon of ornamental motifs employed in traditional Persian art across all mediums. Works as diverse as the frontispiece of a Shahnama and a fragment of a textile, or a panel of architectural tiles and a village prayer rug, are juxtaposed in ways that point up their use of such similar decorative elements as geometric medallions and floral arabesques. Miniatures, surrounded by panels of elegant nastsıliq script, make up the largest part of the exhibition and underscore the central place occupied by calligraphy in the Persian aesthetic. There is also a selection of ceramic vessels and a group of textiles in a variety of weaving techniques on display.

The Museum is organizing this exhibition in honor of the visit to Portland of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, which takes place May 13-15, 2001. The focus will be on the religious scroll paintings known as thankas, but there will also be a small selection of bronze sculpture and objects related to tantric rituals.
