The art of Traditional String Puppetry in Hong Kong
| ||||
| Known as Xuansi Kuilei ('held-thread puppets'), the string puppet gained widespread popularity in the provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi, Shanxi, Sichuan and Fujian during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Prior to the 1960s, there were no professional string puppeteers in the territory except the Hakka ones, who mainly performed in the rural areas during festivals and the birthdays of the gods. Fujian string puppetry was introduced to Hong Kong and became one of the major puppet theatres since the 1970s. This exhibition features the origins, history, manipulating techniques, and the religious practices related to the string puppet theatre in Hong Kong, as well as the craft of making string puppets. It is hoped that the exhibition will enable visitors to have a better understanding of this traditional performance. | ||||
