•Treasures of Kitano Temmangu Shrine
April 10 - May 13, 2001 (Closed April 16, 23, May 7)

This exhibition commemorates the 1100th anniversary of the death the great Japanese literary figure, Sugawara Michizane (845-903) to be held in 2002 at Kitano Shrine (Kitano Temmangu) in Kyoto. Michizane was an erudite scholar and distinguished politician of the early Heian period. After his death, Sugawara Michizane was deified as the god of scholarship under the name ³Tenjin.² He was buried in Kitano Shrine and is still strongly associated with the symbols for which it is famous: the 25th day of every month (on which is held the Tenjin flea market), the plum blossoms of early spring, and cows. Each of these symbols has a meaning deriving from some event in Michizane¹s life, and pilgrimages to the shrine in each season have become an essential part of Kyoto culture.
