•New Acquisitions of the Kyoto National Museum, I
June 27 - July 29, 2001

This exhibition features works acquired by the Museum during the last fiscal year. Approximately 60 objects or groups of objects on exhibit.


•Sakamoto Ryoma: Ryoma and His Contemporaries
August 1 - September 2, 2001

The exhibition includes letters, personal belongings, and other objects related to this late-Edo-period hero from the Museum and private collections.


•Itakura Kido, Plum and Camellia Blossoms Scroll Stained with the Blood of Sakamoto Ryoma

The Kyoto National Museum owns a large collection of letters and personal belongings of this late Edo-period idol. Among these objects are letters from Ryoma to his older brother and sister in Tosa, a lineage chart of the Sakamoto family, documents from the Kaientai company, certificates of swordsmanship, a kimono worn by Ryoma and bearing his family crest, katana sword blades, and the famous blood-stained scroll that was hanging in the room in which Ryoma was assassinated. Exhibits will also include Ryoma¹s letter to Kawarazuka Motaro, widely publicized after it's discovery last year, as well as related letters borrowed especially for this exhibition.


•Treasures of Chishaku-in Temple
September 27 - October 28, 2001

Featuring wall paintings by Hasegawa Tohaku and Kyuzo and other cultural properties from the temple collection, this exhibition commemorates the 400th anniversary of the reconstruction of Chishaku-in.


•Expressions of the Human Image
October 23 - November 25, 2001

The exhibit showcases masterpieces of Japanese and Chinese art relating to people, including both images of figures and abstract symbols of human presence.

The exhibit displays works of contemporary Chinese painting from the Suma Collection, recently donated to the Museum.


•Lions and Lion-Dogs
January 4 - March 24, 2002

Sculpture of lions and komainu(lion-dogs) from the early Heian and Kamakura periods with an emphasis of the history and development of the genre are on exhibit.


•Masterpieces of Japanese Art from the National Gallery in Prague
January 12 - February 17, 2002

Ukiyo-ewoodblock prints and other works of Japanese art from the National Gallery in Prague are on exhibit.

July 1 - September 30, 2001

Archaeological artifacts of the Paleolithic, Jomon, Yayoi, and Kofun periods (3000 BC - AD 7th century) from various regions of Japan are on display, as well as historical excavated artifacts from the Asuka-Kamakura periods (6th -14th century).

Hyakki yagyo(Night Procession of One Hundred Demons) (Shinju-an), Junirui emaki(Poetry Contest of the Twelve Zodiac Animals) and Edo painting of summer scenes were on display.

Rotation II: August 1 - August 26, 2001
Gaki zoshi(Tales of Hungry Ghosts) (KNM), Yata Jizo engi(Origins of the Yata-dera JizoImage) (Yata-dera), etc., and Edo paintings of animals and birds were on display.

Rotation III: August 29 - September 24, 2001
Honen shonin eden(Biography of the Priest Honen) (Chion-in), other Pure Land Buddhist paintings and Edo-period literati (bunjinga)landscapes of the four seasons are on display.



•Pre-Modern Japanese Paintings

Momoyama- and Edo-period screen and fusuma paintings of real and imaginary scenery by Togan, Sanraku, Sansetsu, and Taiga were on display.

Rotation II: August 18 - August 20, 2001
Eccentric painters of the Edo period (17th-19th c), including Rosetsu, Shohaku, and Jakuchu were on display.

Rotation III: August 1 - August 26, 2001
Masterworks of fusuma (sliding-door) painting by Togan, Yusho and Taiga were on display.

An exhibition of objects acquired by the Kyoto National Museum in the 2000 fiscal year.
