•Treasures along the Silk Road Steppe and Oasis Routes
September 1 - November 11, 2001

This exhibition looks at the history of East-West interactions from the East Asian perspective. The selected ceramics and craftworks, such as metal and glass objects, are arranged under the four main themes, "Admiration," "Contact," "Reception" and "Interchange" to recreate the 5000-year history of the East Asian interchange with the foreign cultures of the West. Also, the exhibition will look back at the history of research and excavations conducted by the Museum and the Middle Eastern Culture Center.


• 35th Anniversary Exhibition: Tea Utensils and Hanging Scrolls
November 23, 2001 - February 17, 2002

Rarely displayed tea utensils from the Idemitsu Collection are exhibited together in Tokyo for the first time. The focus of this exhibition is the tea utensils and the kakemono(hanging scrolls) used for decoration in the tea ceremony. Also exhibited are the National Treasure Album of Segmented Scrolls, Minu-yo-no-tomoand Mandala of Risyukyo Sutra.
