Finding Paradise: Island Art in Private Collections
April 11 - May 26, 2002 | ||||
| Hawai'i's history is richly reflected in a diverse body of cultural forms: art, artifacts, and popular vernacular. Hawai'i's post-contact pictorial heritage was displayed to great acclaim in the Academy's 1992 exhibit, "Encounters with Paradise: Views of Hawaii and Its People, 17781941." The paintings, drawings, and watercolors on view in that exhibit depicted the changing times and face of Hawai'i's land and people up to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This exhibit follows it a decade later by presenting for the first time a survey of other art forms central to the understanding of Hawai'i's history, its expression of self, and perception of others spanning the time period of pre-Western contact to the monarchy and turn of the century Hawai'i, and on to the early 20th century to statehood. Among other highlights it will include images of the monarchy and examples of its material culture including personal possessions of the alii; a variety of paintings, prints, and drawings that depict the islands and human activities; images of and objects associated with leisure time pursuits such as surfing and playing the ukulele; the promotion of Hawai'i as an island paradise through printed materials and popular kitsch; a selection of quilts that reflect the development of island-based quiltmaking traditions; and the growth of modernist, island-style decorative arts in ceramic, furniture, sculptural, and jewelry forms that express the spirit of Hawai'i as lived by local residents and desired by visitors alike. | ||||
