•Dermatome
January 12 - February 18, 2002

This exhibit explores the concept of skin as invisibly partitioned or mapped by criteria including dermatomes (the unseen anatomical distribution of skin which is served by a specific spinal nerve), acupuncture meridians, phrenology charts and chakras, or the sensorimotor homunculus. The skin is the first immunological border, the body's largest organ, a tough, selectively permeable envelope. Tattooing, branding, and scarification manipulate the skin as tabula rasa, but the selected artists look beyond the skin as membrane writ, embracing a range of new media and materials, or executing innovative concepts using traditional materials. Skin as surface, matter, material, metaphor, border, contour, or mask are addressed by international artists.

Participating artists include Allan deSouza, Heather Sparks, Mark Depman, Qiu Zhijie, Meghan LeBorious, Jeff Wyckoff, Daiki Wakachi, Stas Orlovski, Catya Plate, Pan Xing Lei, Michelle Lopez, among others.
