•"Paint it Black": An Exhibition of Ink Paintings by Yang Gang
September 8 - September 30, 2001

Yang Gang's latest exhibit encompasses images of landscapes, dance and sport. The distinctive feature of Yang Gang's paintings is his powerful brushwork, which creates a strong, yet sensitively rendered image.

•Lady in Red: An Exhibition of Oil Paintings by Hoang Duc Dung
November 2 - November 30, 2001

This was the first exhibit in Hong Kong of oil paintings by the Vietnamese artist, Hoang Duc Dung. At first glance, Duc Dung's monochromatic canvases are immediately striking in their bold use of pure colour, ranging from deep magenta to flame orange and saffron. As the viewer's eye becomes accustomed to the painting, however, delicate female nude figures emerge through the glowing background. So refined is the artist's brushwork that they seem barely delineated; resulting in an air of mystery as well as warmth and intimacy.

•Back to the Future
December 1 - December 31, 2001

The 20th century saw important advances in the development of Chinese painting, away from a rigid formulaic approach towards greater freedom and variety. Early pioneers such as Xu Beihong (1895-1953) and Lin Fengmian (1900-1991) went abroad to study, bringing back Western art influences which revitalized the Chinese painting tradition. But it was the next generation of expatriate Chinese artists, such as Wu Guanzhong (b.1919) and Zao Wouki (b.1921) who succeeded in fully integrating Western and Oriental painting styles. The exhibit features a selection of limited edition prints on rice paper of paintings by the internationally renowned master, Wu Guanzhong, who draws inspiration from nature but concentrates on the rhythm of abstract forms rather than objective representation; boldly coloured paintings of animals and birds by his former pupil, Li Fuyuan; expressionist works by Shi Qi; and surrealistic landscapes by Xui Liang. Other artists whose work is to be exhibited include Liu Mao-Shan, Ko Nam and Hu Yongkai.
