•Noted Chinese art scholar, Hans van Dijk, died on April 30, 2002 in Beijing. He was 56 years old. He died of complications related to excessive bleeding in the stomach. Mr. van Dijk leaves behind two brothers who reside in his native Holland and another one residing in Fiji. Last rites will be held at the Babao Mountain crematorium.

Mr. van Dijk studied design in his native Holland and came to China in 1986, when he began work in Nanjing and later Beijing documenting and archiving the works of contemporary Chinese artists. He set up the New Amsterdam Art Consultancy in Beijing, which organized numerous exhibitions and activities involving Chinese art. And, in 1999, he joined with collector Frank Uytterhaegen and artist Ai Weiwei to found China Art Archives and Warehouse and the China Modern Art Foundation, both of which tirelessly championed (and archived) Chinese art domestically and abroad. His computerized archive of over 5000 Chinese artists will no doubt be an invaluable document of the artists and art of the last 16 years in China.
