•Technology as Catalyst: Textile Artists on the Cutting Edge
February 15 - July 28, 2002

The exhibit explores the rapidly changing world of handmade textiles by focusing on textile art by six contemporary textile artists who use digital printing and/or digital weaving equipment to construct their art. Two artists of note for our readers are Junco Sato Pollack (Prof. of Textiles, Georgia State University), who uses a process in which dyes are sublimated by heat into the molecular structure of the fabric to simultaneously color and texture the surface, and Hitoshi Ujiie (Asst. Professor, Philadelphia University), who combines a hands-on approach with computer technology to produce his art.

•Deceptively Simple: The Complexities of Plain Weave
November 21, 2001 - June 2, 2002

The exhibit focuses on the simplest interlacing of warp (vertical) and weft (horizontal) yarns, in which each weft goes under one warp and over the next. By changing the yarns' color, thickness, or material, weavers can produce a range of appearances. Plain weave textiles are also used as a ground fabric for other types of patterning such as embroidery or appliqué. The textiles in this exhibition show that, although the structure of plain weave is simple, results can be varied and complex.

•Secrets of Silk
June 28, 2002 - January 5, 2003

This exhibit explores the production and use of one of the world's most luxurious fibers. The textiles on view highlight the creativity of different silk weaving cultures around the world and show how weavers and embroiderers have produced textiles that delight the eye with their vibrant colors and lustrous sheen. The exhibit also explores the unique properties of silk and the labor-intensive process of silkworm cultivation. Textiles drawn exclusively from the Museum's collections, such as the colorful kimono shown at right, will be on view.
