•Tonkin Gallery of Asian and African Art
Ongoing

Ranging in date from the 3rd century BC to the 19th century AD, the collection includes representative pots, dishes, and sculpture made in China, Japan, Korea, and Cambodia. The majority are porcelains made in China for export to western markets, particularly to England and America, chiefly during the 18th century. Mass-produced in China, these porcelain mugs, tea sets, dishes, and complete dinner services were frequently painted with mythological scenes, coats-of-arms, or inscriptions specified by the patron. Among the remainder of the Asian ceramic collection are cooking vessels, vases, and other utilitarian wares, as well as sculpture of Taoist immortals, all made for domestic use. Also included are many ink paintings and calligraphic works.
