•Sook Jin Jo and Ellen Petraits
May 31 - July 14, 2002

This exhibit shows the creative possibilities of using wood and paper as fiber art viewed in context of other fiber arts. Sook-Jin Jo uses found wood scraps gathered from demolished buildings to create constructions of amazing pathos. They are abstract in nature, occasionally referencing their prior uses but primarily taking advantage of the visual effect of edges, surfaces and depth. Jo views her art as both artifacts of the street and symbols of a higher consciousness, manipulating the surfaces of her wood pieces to enhance the aesthetic effect and to remove the works from classification into traditional painting or sculpture. Ellen Petraits' Apiary Series began when she found an abandoned beehive and opened it to find cells of wax and the remnants of honey adhering to the wooden frames. She also works with encaustic (paint made with wax) on wood in her Wabi-Sabi Series, illustrating the Japanese concept that values the imperfect, impermanent nature of objects.
