•The New Way of Tea
March 6 - May 19, 2002

The exhibit explores the importance of Japanese tea tradition as a vital source of inspiration for contemporary architects and artists from East Asia and the U.S. On display are an array of tea utensils and three teahouses, representing both the traditional and the avant-garde. Fusuma (sliding door) paintings by Japanese artist Hiroshi Senju are also featured. Catalogue available.

Tokyo Design Now
A discussion with leading Japanese architects, designers and design curators on the state of design in Tokyo today. Participants include Kan Akita (graphic designer and Art Director, Akita Design Kan, Inc.); Junji Ito (art critic, curator and producer); Masayuki Kurokawa (Principal, Masayuki Kurokawa Architect & Associates); and Takashi Sugimoto (interior designer and Principal, Super Potato Co., Ltd). Moderated by Paola Antonelli (Curator of Architecture and Design, The Museum of Modern Art).

American Art for Japanese Tea, William Thrasher (independent curator)
William Thrashe illustrates and discusses a number of artists whose work has ranged from interpretations of traditional aesthetics to pieces that are more free and contemporary in feeling.
